Ostara, Spring, New Growth

Ostara, Spring, New Growth
Ostara, Spring, New Growth

New Growth. Tucked beneath the soil. Spring.

Sometimes when we’re about to embark on something new, there is hesitation. Is it more safe where we are? We don’t know what’s on the other side of change. It’s possible that a sunflower seed feels the same. It’s tucked away in rich, beautiful Earth – blanketed, secure. How does it know that something is happening, that change is happening? How does it know to break free of the hard kernel, and send roots into the Earth? That, at least is a comfort. It knows Earth. The soil is alive. But what lies above?

The Sunflower pokes its first tentative, green scout above the soil, a tiny, vulnerable barely-leaf, and feels the blessed sunlight, not even knowing that the Sun is its namesake and navigator. And with that first warmth, begins to realize  that it yearns to strive toward that light with all its power, all its force, growing and growing. Read the rest of this entry

Samhain Poem: All Hallows Eve

Samhain Poem: All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve

 By Sally Dubats

Welcome ye now

to All Hallows Eve

Open the door

To webs we weave.

.

Midpoint between

Mabon and Yule

See the unseen

When nature is dual

Love and Light,

To Friends who’ve passed,

Taking our flight

Together at last.

The Veil is thin

Between our Worlds

You’ll hear the din

As belief unfurls

Apples and Candy

Bobbing and fun

Celebrate, Yes!

But when feasting is done…

Settle ye spirits

On this Sacred night,

Time to hear

Our stories of plight

We remember now

Those we’ve lost

And our heads do bow

At the great cost

Fathers and Mothers,

Sisters and Brothers,

Friends and Lovers,

Cousins and Others.

So candles burn

To honor those passed

And show the way

To Summerland’s rest.

The Veil will lower,

This we know

But cherish the hour

And don’t be low.

In a year and a day

Bless’ed candles we’ll burn

An’ next All Hallows Eve

Departed Spirits Return

***

With Love, Light, and Brightest Blessings

Happy Samhain,

Sally

Imbolc Floating Candles

Imbolc Floating Candles

Imbolc is February 2nd, the midpoint between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. The days are getting longer, which literally means more light, sunlight, fills our days. We can use this as symbolic of more light in our lives. If you’re in school, Imbolc is a great way to mark how few months are left until Summer Vacation! Using candlelight is the perfect way to bring more joy and light into our lives. As we focus on it, so it is!

There is no limit on the amount of joy we can experience. The purpose of this magickal work is to create joy, or to expand your joy. It can also be used as an initiation to a new phase of your life and an opportunity to connect with the Sacred.

You will need: A large bowl filled with water (a glass bowl is lovely because of its reflective properties, but any large bowl will work). A candle to float (removing the tin from a tea light will work, or use candles specifically suited to floating). Use one candle per person if several people are present. You will also need oil or incense to bless the candle, and matches or a lighter.

You may do this with a group, coven, or by yourself. You may also do this in a circle as part of ritual, or simply as a tool while visualizing.

Sit with your bowl of water in front of you. Hold your candle, close your eyes, and take three sacred breaths. First Sacred Breath: Inhale. Exhale slowly, and completely relax your body. Breathe for a moment. Second Sacred Breath: Inhale. Exhale slowly and completely relax and clear your mind, moving deep within the Self and letting go of the cares of the day. Breathe a moment. Third Sacred Breath: Inhale. Exhale slowly, and allow your Spirit to settle and know that all is as it should be. Open your eyes. Breathe.

The magickal Imbolc work you are about to do is filled with symbolism and meaning. Each element is present. The Water in your bowl represents the Waters of All Time that have moved through every single life that has ever lived: present for every emotion and thought (hold your hand over the Water and thank it or do another blessing that you prefer). The candle and wick represent the Earth: Gaia has experienced every footstep and event since the existence of humankind (hold your hand over the Earth/candle and thank it, or do another blessing you prefer). When you light the candle, Fire is present: Just as fire had the power to change the course of humankind when first discovered, it can change the course of your life. Air: Necessary for Fire, mingled in Water, and keeps everything on Earth alive.

Gaze at your unlit candle. Like you, it is potential. Like you, it is formed to a particular purpose. Like you, it will become something else when that purpose (lighting it) is activated. Consider that you have more work to do on this planet, and that you are open and receptive to change. Know that the candle will go through an initiation and change to a higher calling, just as you are about to go through initiation and a higher calling. Use either incense or oil that you have blessed and/or thanked – and bless the candle. To do this: Light the incense, and hold the candle within the smoke, knowing that the candle is in its perfection and surrenders to the process of initiation and change. As an alternative, dab a bit of oil on the bottom of the candle. Even a dab of olive oil works if you don’t have essential oil.

As you light the candle, say these words or words of your choosing that have meaning for you, “I light this candle, perfect as it is, as a symbol. I am perfect as I am, and now choose to move forward and expand my Light Within. I am willing to step forward into a new Light. I am willing to change.”

Gently place the lit candle into the water.*

Because we are all One, and separation is an illusion, we can now use this lit candle to represent the All. As you gaze at the floating candle (or candles if you are in a group), focus on the changes you want to see in your life, knowing that you are cradled in sacred waters of change. Water can be mist, ice, rain or a vast ocean. We can be as many things too, and just as powerful. Next, expand the beauty of your perfect vision to your family. Then expand to your community of friends. Then expand to the city where you live. Then expand to your state or province. Then expand to your country. Then expand to the planet. Visualize the planet as filled with Perfect Light, Perfect Love.

Hold the vision.

Take the Three Sacred Breaths to center and ground yourself(ves).

Blessed be and wishing you a beautiful Imbolc.

*Of course, always use extreme caution when working with fire, candles, incense, etc. Never leave burning candles unattended.

Initiation, Rebirth, and Light.

Initiation, Rebirth, and Light.

This is a very important, personal, and special Imbolc for me. I’m taking the time to look at my Life as it is now, and compare it to the Wheel of the Year. Jung might have called it the Hero’s Journey.

Much of the Craft as we know it today is based on recent reconstruction. In some cases, the spells and rituals had more to do with the personality of the creator than being historically correct. Even more to the point, depending on the influence of that personality, their spells and rituals became The Law. If you didn’t do ritual or magick a particular way, you weren’t doing them right! Er… Welcome, Pagan Dogma? I know all about this because at one point I was a do-it-the-right-way Pagan snob. Now? Not so much. Blasphemy for some, liberation for me.

So, at Samhain last year, life began to turn to a tide that proved unbearable uncomfortable. I did a personal ritual to usher in the perfect life events to take me in the direction I was supposed to go. It was, after all, Samhain: the New Year. By Solstice, I was on the road. I left my partner of five years, and was coming home to Oregon. It was my goal to be in Oregon by the Solstice, and I made it. I had just finished “Winter Shock” which was a joy, but that joy was suffocated by the huge task of recreating my very Life, so I hadn’t had the opportunity to celebrate my accomplishment.

I got an amazing discount at a seaside lodge. It was perfect! I had a lovely personal Yule celebration in a huge, private hot tub on the Oregon Coast with some very nice aged scotch and fudge. This was seriously the only thing that I had available for cakes and ale; I’m not complaining! I see the humor. I did the whole Solstice ritual in the round hot tub, practically big enough to swim in, listening to the waves wildly crashing outside my window feeling totally free for the first time in a very long time. I celebrated the birth of “Winter Shock.” The ritual was a time of immense gratitude to the Goddess and the God, a time for inward reflection and setting intention, and it also represented an in-between time, the longest night of the year when we’re contemplative, then turn toward light. The hot tub became a large womb, like a cauldron. I gave myself the gift of another chance to be the “Sally” I came here to be, nurtured by the Goddess. The energy was phenomenal. It was an amazing experience. I’ll never forget it.

Now, at Imbolc, I certainly have a lot to celebrate, and after hitting rock bottom on so many levels back in December, which feels like a lifetime ago (indeed, it was another life), I certainly have nothing but potential!

And so we come to Imbolc. I go with my feelings, and I go with the personality of the creator, which in this case, is me. In your case, it’s you. I energetically feel the cross quarter Sabbats much more than I do the Solstices and Equinoxes – not always, but it’s a general trend. This year, Jupiter is going direct just before Imbolc. I’m a Sagittarian, and Jupiter is my ruling planet – the planet of expansion, so this makes me happy! I celebrate Imbolc with light, using lots of candles, and combining that with Jupiter going direct, I’m celebrating with my Inner Light Expanding. I know this is all very personal, but I believe that’s how we all learn and grow. We trust. We splay ourselves wide open in the face of Life, and become teachers, healers, friends and support for each other. We’re all in this together. I hope you think about how your Wheel of the Year is going — the seeds, the growth, and how our personal shadows always, always, always lead us to the Light.

Imbolc, for me, is all about potential, initiation, honoring the coming light. We’ve made it through the coldest, darkest part of the year (I’ve made it through the coldest, darkest part of my life so far), and now we’re closer to the Light. The days are growing longer. We move from inward reflection to action. I turned fifty last November and didn’t celebrate and honor my huge, enormous, giant, stupendous, cosmic event (there’s an adjective for every decade). I kindled the desire for change on Samhain, was in the womb on Solstice, so now, on Imbolc, it’s time to be born. I’m having an Imbolc ritual filled with Light, and it’s going to be my Birthday party — surrounded by great friends I love and adore! It is an Initiation, and those present at the ritual will be stepping forward in to their Initiation and new birth as well. This will be joyful!

I think we invent Life as we go along.

So, where are you this Imbolc? Is it a rite of passage, a time of expansion, a time to grow the Light within, a time of initiation, or maybe even a Birth Day for you too? Invent your Life!

Goddess Guidance at Samhain

Goddess Guidance at Samhain

With Samhain, the New Year dawns. We know that the Veil Between Worlds thins, and we have the opportunity to commune with and/or honor loved ones who have crossed to the other side. That same thin Veil allows us to commune with Goddess energy.

Samhain is an excellent time to listen to the Divine Feminine, the Wise Crone, the Goddess. Listen to your heart, and listen to your dreams and goals.

Working with crystals and stones is an excellent way to tune in to the receptive energies of the Goddess. Take time to meditate with a crystal or a stone with the qualities you wish to draw to you while you meditate.

You can also do a crystal or stone layout on your body while you meditate.

This can be as simple as placing a crystal on your heart while relaxing, or seven selected stones to place on the seven major chakras, or as complex as a crystal layout on each chakra and doing a chakra clearing meditation or a meditation that guides you to the Goddess. While meditating, ask to be shown what your next steps should be, but ask without frustration, anxiety or worry. Ask with an openness of heart, and receptivity. You might be surprised at the answer!

Brightest blessings for a beautiful Samhain.
